On March 04, 2020, Ms Pallavi Kumar received a call from Mr Bulu Behera regarding a call on the helpline from Mr J, SHO of the Kalyanpuri Police Station. He wanted to speak to someone senior from the Delhi office. Bulu had shared Ms Pallavi’s number with him.
As soon as this call got over, Pallavi received a call from Mr Yadav. He informed her that he had been approached by Apollo Hospital Delhi regarding an accident case last evening where the family had agreed for organ donation. He said that he did not understand what his role in the matter was and therefore had refused to give the ‘NOC’ as it wasn’t something he could take responsibility for. Pallavi explained to him in detail regarding organ donation in a Medico Legal Case and the role of the police and the forensic He asked some more questions that were addresses. Other such cases were shared with him as well. Pallavi encouraged him to support the hospital and the family and that it would enable him to do a very noble deed and save many lives.
In half an hour, Pallavi received a call from the Transplant Coordinator at Apollo saying that SHO had called her back and had asked her to proceed with the case and had offered his complete support. Sadly the brain dead potential donor had sepsis and the donation could not be taken forward.
This was a very unique call as it is for the first time that the helpline had received a call from a policeman. While he had refused to cooperate the previous day, he was not convinced about his decision and he searched online to find the MOHAN Foundation helpline and called to get greater clarity. This really demonstrates the expanding role the helpline is beginning to play.
