  • Smt. Ningthoujam Mani  Devi - 50 Years

Smt. Ningthoujam Mani Devi, a 50-year-old weaver from Wangbal Maning Leikai in the Thoubal district of Manipur, was a single mother of two boys. She separated from her husband early in their marriage, shortly after the birth of their second son. Her life largely centered around raising her two sons and taking care of the family.

A few months ago, Mani frequently complained of imbalance, forgetfulness, occasional headaches, and vomiting. Her sons took her to various hospitals and doctors, but none could diagnose her condition. As they went from one appointment to another, Mani's health continued to deteriorate. When she was finally hospitalized, she was diagnosed with glioma, and there was no hope for her survival. Subsequently, she was declared brain dead after her stay in the ICU for six days.

When MOHAN Foundation's counsellors introduced organ donation to the family, the choice to donate her corneas stemmed from a place of genuine compassion amidst the sorrow. Although the family struggled with this decision, they understood the impact it could have on many lives. The corneas were donated and retrieved by the Manipur State Eye Bank on May 19, 2024, at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompat, Imphal-East, Manipur.

It is often said that a small family is a happy family, but my mother never had the opportunity to experience that happiness. She was our world, our friend, and never made us feel that we were without our father. We had dreams and plans together, but she left us too early. However, I am glad and grateful that my mother left the world on a high note. Through her selfless act of donating her eyes, she ensured that her legacy lives on by giving the gift of sight to two people in need," expressed Mr. Bapin, the eldest son of Smt. Mani, with a sense of fulfilment.

She was always a social enthusiast, a giver, a provider, and a refuge for those in need. It's no surprise her sons agreed to donate her corneas, knowing that she would have gladly done so herself if she had the opportunity to say yes. She is blessed and a lucky one," added the sister of Smt. Mani.

Two days before the Shraddha ceremony, representatives from MOHAN Foundation and Manipur State Eye Bank visited Smt. Mani's family to express their gratitude and present a certificate of appreciation. The team deeply appreciated the family's decision to facilitate the donation.
