Organ Donation Awareness Talk for Nursing Staff at Lata Mangeshkar Medical College & Hospital, Digdi, Hingna, Nagpur

  • On July 16, 2024, Lata Mangeshkar Medical College & Hospital celebrated Organ Donation Day at the Conference Hall. Dr. Mayank Gadkari, Administrative Officer, extended an invitation to Mr. Bulu Behera, transplant coordinator from the MOHAN Foundation, to deliver a talk on organ donation.

    Mr. Behera covered a wide range of topics during his presentation, starting with the definition of organs and the eligibility criteria for organ donation. He discussed the different types of deaths such as brain death and natural death and highlighted which organs and tissues can be donated in each case. The session also delved into the distinctions between organs and tissues, the age limits for organ donation, and detailed processes such as eye donation and body donation. Mr. Behera explained the procedures involved in live and cadaver transplants, as well as the legal regulations under the Organ Transplant Act of 1994. He also outlined the roles and functions of organizations like NOTTO, ROTTO, SOTTO, and ZTCC in facilitating organ donation schemes, along with the significance of helpline numbers and donor cards in the process. Additionally, he emphasized the pivotal role of the MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation awareness and facilitating donations.

    Following the comprehensive presentation, participants engaged in an interactive session where they posed various questions. Queries included inquiries about the leadership and operational scope of the MOHAN Foundation, benefits derived from its activities, time factors for body donation post-death, contact points for organ donation inquiries, and documentation requirements for kidney transplants. Mr. Behera attentively addressed all questions raised by the approximately 90 nursing staff members in attendance.

    The impactful session concluded with 15 nursing staff members signing consent forms for organ donation, while others opted to complete their forms online. Dr. Mayank Gadkari was thanked for his support and encouragement in promoting such a noble cause.
