  • On July 14, 2024, Mr. Vijay Waghmare, the NCC officer at VNIT College, Subhash Nagar, Nagpur, facilitated an enlightening session on organ donation by inviting Mr. Bulu Behera, a transplant coordinator from the MOHAN Foundation. The talk took place at Conference Hall E, where approximately 70 NCC students gathered to learn about the critical aspects of organ donation.

Mr. Behera began by explaining fundamental concepts such as the definition of organs and tissues eligible for donation. He elaborated on the criteria for becoming an organ donor and discussed the various types of deaths relevant to organ donation, distinguishing between brain death and natural death. Students gained insights into which organs and tissues can be donated under these circumstances.

The session also covered the difference between organs and tissues, the age limit for organ donation, and the processes involved in eye and body donation. Mr. Behera highlighted the procedures for both live and cadaver transplants, emphasizing the legal framework provided by the Organ Transplant Act of 1994.

Students actively participated in a question-and-answer segment following the presentation. They posed queries about post-kidney transplant care, reasons for transplant rejection, the distinction between coma and brain death, and the life expectancy of organ transplant recipients. Mr. Behera adeptly addressed each question, providing clarity on complex medical concepts and outcomes post-transplant.

The interactive session concluded with a significant outcome as five students chose to sign consent forms for organ donation, reflecting their understanding and commitment to this noble cause. The event concluded on a positive note, with gratitude extended to Mr. Vijay Waghmare for fostering awareness and education on organ donation among the NCC students at VNIT College, Nagpur.
