Organ Donation Awareness Talk at SICU, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur

  • The Government of India's Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has launched a public awareness campaign named "Angdan Jagurkta Abhiyan" aimed at promoting organ donation across the country. July 2024, has been designated as Organ Donation Month, culminating in the observance of Organ Donation Day on August 3rd. In collaboration with Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College & Hospital, the MOHAN Foundation-Nagpur has taken proactive steps to organize a series of events leading up to this significant day.

    On July 16, 2024, Dr. Vaishali Shelgaonkar, Head of the Anaesthesia department at the hospital, extended an invitation to the MOHAN Foundation to conduct an organ donation awareness session. This session was specifically arranged for families of patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) as well as the staff of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Dr. Shelgaonkar initiated the session by providing a comprehensive overview of organ donation, emphasizing its importance and the impact it can have on saving lives. Following her presentation, Dr. Sonali Khobragade encouraged participants to pledge their support towards this noble cause, highlighting the critical need for organ donors in the community.

    Ms. Bhagyashree, a representative from the MOHAN Foundation, then took the floor to delve into the intricacies of organ retrieval, allocation procedures, and the operational framework governing organ donations. Her detailed explanation aimed to educate and clarify any doubts among the attendees regarding the process of organ donation.

    During the session, MOHAN Foundation actively engaged with the audience by distributing informational brochures and pledge forms. This initiative aimed to empower individuals with the necessary knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about becoming organ donors. The event was attended by Dr. Vaishali Shelgaonkar, Dr. Sonali Khobragade, Dr. Parag Sabale, and the entire anaesthesia and ICU teams, demonstrating their commitment to promoting awareness and facilitating discussions on organ donation. In total, the session saw enthusiastic participation from 30 attendees, all of whom contributed to the enriching dialogue surrounding this crucial healthcare initiative.
