MOHAN Foundation was invited by the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) to the 14th Indian Organ Donation Day celebration at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre on August 3, 2024. To commemorate the occasion, NOTTO, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, organized the celebration programme in New Delhi. Ms. Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, was the chief guest, and Dr. Vinod K. Paul, a Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, was the guest of honour. The event was also attended by Apurva Chandra, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, along with senior doctors from various states and medical institutions.
Indian Organ Donation Day has been observed annually since 2010. Its purpose is to raise awareness about brain stem death and organ donation, dispel myths and misconceptions, and encourage citizens to donate organs and tissues after death.
Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, and Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of NOTTO, were the main hosts for the event. The event included various programs such as an inaugural ceremony, a cultural performance, and the recognition of donor families and recipients. An award ceremony followed, featuring categories like Best ROTTO & SOTTO, Emerging State, State with the Highest Number of Deceased Donors, UT with the Highest Number of Deceased Donors, State with the Most Organ Donation Pledges, Lifetime Achievement Award for transplant professionals, Best BSD Certifying Team, Emerging NTORC, Best Society Promoting Organ Donation, Pioneering Women in Transplantation, Active Lung Transplant Center, Promoting Ethical Transplantation, and Representing Transplant Professionals in India and Abroad.
An award category titled “Supportive NGOs” was presented to nine NGOs promoting organ donation in India. Among the awarded NGOs, the MOHAN Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum (MFJCF) was one of them. The MF Delhi team and MFJCF members were present at the event to receive the award.
Ms. Patel felicitated donor families of brain-dead patients. She also recognized organ recipients and doctors nationwide for their successful transplantations. Ms. Patel noted that the organ donation rate has quadrupled to 18,378 over the past decade, praising the efforts of both doctors and donor families for their life-saving decisions.
Speaking to Akashvani News, NOTTO Director Dr. Anil Kumar emphasized the crucial role of organ donation. He encouraged people to step forward and donate organs to save lives. He concluded with a vote of thanks to the guests and delegates.
Around 800 people attended the event.
