  • On July 31, 2024, MOHAN Foundation's Transplant Coordinator, Mr. Bulu Behera, was invited by Mrs. Madhushree Sharve, Social Worker and In-Charge of the Nephrology OPD at Lata Mangeshkar Hospital & Medical College, to provide an informative session on organ donation. Mr. Behera addressed approximately 30 nursing staff members, delivering a comprehensive overview of various aspects of organ donation.

During the session, Mr. Behera explained key concepts such as what constitutes an organ, who is eligible to donate organs, and the different types of death—brain death and natural death—and their implications for organ donation. He clarified which organs and tissues can be donated in each case, the differences between organs and tissues, and the age limits for donation. Additionally, he discussed the processes involved in eye and body donation, as well as the procedures for live and cadaver transplants.

Mr. Behera also outlined the rules and regulations related to organ transplantation, including the Organ Transplant Act of 1994 and the roles of various organizations such as NOTTO, ROTTO, SOTTO, and ZTCC in the donation process. He provided information on the schemes for organ transplants and emphasized the importance of the helpline number and donor card.

Following the presentation, participants asked several questions, which Mr. Behera addressed. The questions included inquiries about the lifespan of patients after a kidney transplant, government schemes for kidney transplants, whom to contact for organ donation, and who would be the recipients of the donated organs.

The session was well-received, with 3 nursing staff members signing consent forms for organ donation on-site. The remaining attendees preferred to complete their consent forms online. The MOHAN Foundation appreciates Mrs. Madhushree Sharve for facilitating this important event and supporting the cause of organ donation.
