On March 20, 2025, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the residents of Kshetri Awang Leikai, Imphal-East, Manipur. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer at MOHAN Foundation, served as the key speaker.
The session was organized as part of the Urban Health Sanitation and Nutrition Day (UHSND) under the National Health Mission program. Mr. Gailian Kamei, Transplant Coordinator at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, coordinated the event in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine, JNIMS. Additionally, postgraduate medical students from JNIMS delivered health talks on anaemia in pregnancy, including its prevention and treatment, while visiting medical officers conducted health check-ups.
Mr. Kamei introduced the session and invited Ms. Monica to speak. She began by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its mission, and its key objectives.
Ms. Monica provided an overview of living kidney transplantation in Manipur, highlighting the challenges faced by patients who require transplants but lack suitable donors. She discussed the demand-supply gap in organ donation, the critical issue of organ trafficking in India, and measures to combat this malpractice. She also addressed common myths and misconceptions about organ donation, emphasizing the crucial role of family consent in the donation process. Additionally, she highlighted the renal transplant program available at JNIMS as an option for patients in need.
Encouraging participants to take an active role in promoting organ donation, Ms. Monica urged them to spread awareness within their communities.
Approximately 40 participants attended the session, gaining valuable insights into organ donation and its life-saving potential. The session successfully raised awareness and encouraged attendees to consider pledging as organ donors while sharing their knowledge with friends and family.
