On August 2, 2024, Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer at MOHAN Foundation, was invited by the Principal of N.G. (Nongmeikapam Gopal) College, Lamphelpat, Imphal, to deliver a talk on organ donation. The session was organized as part of the N.G. College NSS (National Service Scheme) Unit I & II Special Camp, held from August 1 to August 7, 2024.
N.G. College, an undergraduate institution under the Government of Manipur since 1980, is affiliated with Manipur University and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. The college has two NSS units with the motto “Not me but you,” which motivate students to participate in various co-curricular activities such as social service camps, extension lectures, and more, fostering a spirit of self-sacrifice.
The session was attended by lecturers, administrative staff, and students of the college. Dr. Ningombam Reagan, Medical Director of the Manipur State Eye Bank and State Ophthalmic Cell, Lamphel, also delivered a speech on cornea donation.
Ms. Monica began the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its vision. She elaborated on several key points:
• The importance of organ donation in society
• When and how organ donation takes place
• Organs that can be donated during life and after death
• The transplant waiting list in India
• The difference between brain death and coma
• Stories of deceased organ donation in Manipur
• How to pledge for organ donation
• Myths and facts about organ donation
Following the presentation, the experts engaged in a brief discussion with the participants, addressing various queries. Additionally, FAQs on organ donation were distributed to the attendees to enhance their understanding of the subject.
The students expressed a strong interest in discussing organ donation with their families and friends.
Nearly 70 participants attended the session, and one person pledged to donate organs through the NOTTO website.
