On November 28, 2024, Mr. Bulu J. Behera, Transplant Coordinator at the MOHAN Foundation, was invited by Dr. Mayank Gadkari, the Admin In-charge of Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, Digdoh, Hingna Road, Nagpur, to conduct an awareness session for kidney patients and their relatives. The session aimed to educate attendees on the importance of organ donation and its various aspects.
During the session, Mr. Behera provided comprehensive information on organ and tissue donation. He explained which organs can be donated after both natural death and brain death, and discussed the time factors involved in organ and tissue transplants. He also covered the age criteria for organ donation, ensuring the audience understood that donation could be considered across a wide age range, depending on various factors. Mr. Behera emphasized the ethical and legal aspects of organ donation, as well as the significant role of the MOHAN Foundation in promoting awareness and facilitating organ donation. He further highlighted the importance of the donor card and the helpline number, which are essential for individuals who wish to donate. Additionally, he shared information on financial support available through various government schemes for organ transplantation and discussed body donation and advanced procedures like hand and leg transplants.
Approximately 50 patients and their relatives attended the session, with 10 individuals signing consent forms to become organ donors. The session proved to be impactful, as participants expressed their willingness to support organ donation.
Several questions were raised during the session, including inquiries about the eligibility of diabetic patients to donate organs and whether a donor card is mandatory for organ donation. Mr. Behera addressed these queries in detail, providing further clarity on these important topics.
