On January 12, 2019, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at the 45th Poush Mela-2019, organized by The Chittaranjan Park Bangiya Samaj. Mr. Sreebash Bhattacharjee (General Secretary, The Chittranjan Park Bangiya Samaj) organized the session. Two sessions were taken with different groups of participants present there. Dr. Pallavi Rekhi & Ms. Pallavi Sood were the resource persons.
The Chittaranjan Park Bangiya Samaj is a premier registered socio-cultural organization of Delhi set up in the year 1970. The Samaj has been rendering pioneering services to the community at large in the fields of promotion of art and culture, education and training, especially for the economically weaker sections of the society by way of holding classes, providing scholarships, health awareness campaign, primary health education, prevention of diseases through health check-up in localities of weaker sections of the society; promotion of sports both indoor and outdoor through holding of training exercises, competitions etc. well appreciated cultural and entertainment programmes to the communities at large viz. Dancing, producing and staging of Dramas, Food Festivals, Handloom Expo, famous Poush Mela initiated by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan.
Dr. Pallavi Rekhi took the first session and began by introducing MOHAN Foundation and asking a few introductory questions from the participants. Then she went on to explain the need to talk about and promote organ donation and transplantation. She explained to the participants the concept of brain death and how is it different from coma. Eye donation was also talked about and the participants were motivated to promote it at individual level.
The second session was taken by Ms. Pallavi Sood. She began by showing a few statistics related to organ donation in India. She then went on to explain the consent systems that are followed all over the world. The myths related to organ donation were cleared.
All the queries were heard and their explanations were given. Majority of the participants were senior citizens and wanted to either pledge their organs or donate their bodies after death for medical research. MF staff helped them with the process of signing up to become organ/body donors.
Close to 28 participants attended the sessions and approximately 20 forms (Form-7) were picked up.
