Awareness Session at the Adugodi Police Station, Bengaluru

  • Mrs. Ranjini Shankar MS, Project Manager of MOHAN Foundation coordinated with Mr. Prashant, Inspector of the Adugodi police station in Bengaluru to organize an awareness session on organ donation for the staff of the station on 3rd August 2021.

    Mrs. Ranjini began the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its mission and vision. She, along with Mr. Marulappa (Transplant Coordinator), proceeded to explain the following:

    • the concept of organ and tissue donation
    • the types of death i.e., cardiac death and brain death
    • brain death declaration, apnea test and other clinical tests
    • procedure of deceased organ donation and live organ donation
    • procedures of eye. skin and bone donation
    • barriers to organ donation
    • myths and facts related to organ donation
    • the role of Jeevasarthakathe
    • transplant law
    • importance of a donor card

    A recent case of donation from Dharwad where organ donation was facilitated by MOHAN Foundation team, using a green corridor was explained to the audience to highlight the role of the police. One of the police officers present, voluntarily came forward to appreciate the work of MOHAN Foundation and also shared a personal experience involving his cousin who was brain dead and their family consented to organ and tissue donation that helped save 3 lives.

    Towards the end of the session a few queries were answered:

    • Age criteria for being a donor
    • Do VIPs receive priority and do not have to wait for organs?
    • Are communicable diseases contraindicators to organ donation?

    Around 40 members attended the session and 38 of them pledged for organ donation.
