Atthi Nursing College, Gudiyattam, in collaboration with the MOHAN Foundation, hosted a two-day workshop on ‘Deceased Organ Donation’ on August 9 and 10, 2024. The workshop was specifically conducted for final-year undergraduate nursing students.
The workshop included following lectures:

1. Deceased Organ Donation - Legal Framework in India:
This session provided a comprehensive overview of the legal framework governing deceased organ donation. It covered essential topics such as the documentation process, consent requirements, and the legal guidelines that must be followed to ensure compliance.
2. Approaching Families for Organ Donation:
In this session, students learned about the sensitive and challenging task of approaching families for organ donation. The session emphasized the importance of effective communication skills. Through case discussions, students were shared the elements of navigating these challenging conversations.
3. Deceased Organ Donation - Process:
This session detailed the entire process of deceased organ donation, from the diagnosis of brainstem death to the coordination of the donation process. The roles and responsibilities of donor coordinator, hospital staff and transplant teams were explained, with a focus on the importance of communication and coordination.

1. Quiz on Brainstem Death and MLC (Medico-Legal Cases):
An interactive quiz was conducted to the students for understanding of brainstem death and coordinating medico-legal cases.
2. FAQs on deceased organ donation:
A Q&A session was conducted, during which students actively participated. This provided them with the opportunity to initiate family discussions, clarify any doubts, and deepen their understanding.
3. Team-Building Exercises:
Recognizing the importance of collaboration in organ donation, the workshop included team-building exercises. These activities aimed get a spirit of teamwork among the participants, ability to work together in high-pressure situations.
4. Communication:
Effective communication is key in the context of organ donation. Group activities were organized to improve the students’ communication skills, focusing on the ability to navigate difficult conversations with grieving families.
5. Deceased Organ Donation Process:
Students participated in a practical activity that guided them through a step-by-step exploration of the deceased organ donation process. This hands-on approach gave them a clear understanding of how to manage the process effectively.
The event concluded with a special ceremony presided over by Prof. P. Soundararajan, Founder and Chairman of Atthi Group of Institutions and Hospital, Gudiyattam. Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee of the MOHAN Foundation, served as the Chief Guest. In honour of Organ Donation Day, the institution organized several competitions, and the winners were recognized and felicitated during the ceremony.
