Vegunta Mohan Prasad, also known as ‘Mo’ is an eminent teacher, exponent of exquisite poetry, post modern writer, translator of repute and a critic with thorough knowledge of poetics of the east and west. As director of Anusrijana, the translation wing of Dravidian University, Mo successfully organized translations of about 100 well known and classic works from Telugu into English. He is well known for his unassuming ways, uncompromising attitude for good quality of work, his love of world literature and inspiring a new generation of poets. He won six awards which include Free verse Front, Telugu University (twice) and Yagalla Foundation. He has recently been awarded the Tanikella Bharani Sahitya Puraskaram for his book Mo – Nishadam.
During the last four decades he published seven volumes of poetry, three books on literary appreciation and several translations for Sahitya Academy. His This Tense Time published in 1980 is the first comprehensive volume of Modern Telugu poetry in English Translation. He has encouraged and inspired several poets and translators.
Sri. Mo suffered a brain haemorrhage on 1st August, and was rushed to Suraksha Hospital, Vijayawada, wherein the doctors informed the family members that his chances of survival are slim. He was put on ventilator immediately. On the morning of 2nd August, the family members decided to donate his organs and give life to as many people as possible. They contacted MOHAN Foundation immediately who swung into action to retrieve his organs. His kidneys, liver and eyes were retrieved during the early hours of 3rd August and used for transplant on patients waiting for organs.
Sri. Mohan Prasad’s daughter, Ms. Mamata says, “My father is a poet and a teacher. Above all, he is a proponent of meaningful life. In the end too, he has lived his message. We are thankful to MOHAN Foundation for the quick and immediate response to our request to donate my father’s organs. Your work is exceptional and truly commendable”.
