Updated on Friday, March 26, 2021
  • On 25th March 2021, Dr. R Nivetha, a MD student of Community Medicine at Tagore Medical College was at the Government Primary and High School, Panaiyur ECR, Chennai. She got an opportunity to talk about organ donation and transplantation to the Teachers of both levels, the respective Headmasters and other non-teaching staff such as sweepers and Anganwadi workers.

She started the session with a brief introduction of herself and MOHAN FOUNDATION and went on to explain the following:

    • Why should organs be donated?  Explained using organ donation statistics in Tamil Nadu & India and the NOTTO recipient waiting list numbers for organ transplant
    • Who can donate organs? Living and deceased donors
    • What are the organs and tissues that could be donated?
    • The THO Act
    • When can one donate organs and tissues? Difference between brain death and coma
    • How can one donate? The process of organ pledging and obtaining donor card

A Q&A session about organ donation myths followed this discussion.

While most of them were supportive of the organ donation cause, they fear backlash from society.
Dr. Nivetha motivated them to be role models to the public by pledging for organ donation.
