On August 20, 2024, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an organ donation ambassador from the MOHAN Foundation, was invited by the National Service Scheme (N.S.S.) Unit of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Goa, to deliver a talk on organ donation for the college students.
The talk was conducted in three sessions at 9:30 AM, 10:45 AM, and 11:45 AM for the B.Com, B.A., and B.Sc. students, respectively. Mr. Pereira began by showing a video explaining brain stem death, followed by an introduction to the MOHAN Foundation. He shared his passion for raising awareness about organ donation and covered various related topics. During the session, he engaged the students by asking them the date on which National Organ Donation Day is commemorated. After receiving a few responses, he explained that the Transplantation of Human Organs Act was passed on July 8, 1994, and that India’s first successful heart transplant surgery was performed by a team led by Dr. P. Venugopal at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on August 3 of the same year.
Mr. Pereira informed the students that in Goa, only kidney and corneal transplants are performed and mentioned the licensed hospitals authorized to retrieve and transplant organs. He also highlighted the various courses offered by the MOHAN Foundation for those interested in learning more.
Mr. Gabriel Pereira concluded by thanking the Principal of St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Ms. Ursula Barreto, for inviting the MOHAN Foundation to conduct the awareness talk and Mr. Sujay Rane for coordinating the student participation.
