On November 20, 2024, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador for the MOHAN Foundation, delivered an inspiring talk on organ donation to the students and teachers of Dnyanprassarak Vidyalaya, Mapusa, Goa.
Mr. Pereira began by introducing the MOHAN Foundation, established in 1997 by Dr. Sunil Shroff, its Founder and Managing Trustee. He highlighted the foundation's extensive operations across various regions of India.
Sharing his personal journey, Mr. Pereira recounted how his sister-in-law’s battle with renal failure and her life-saving transplant motivated him to become an advocate for organ donation. His commitment to spreading awareness in Goa stems from this experience. He urged the audience to extend the conversation beyond the school, encouraging them to inspire family and friends to support organ donation and make a life-changing difference.
Using a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Pereira explained critical topics, including circulatory and brain stem death, the process of organ and tissue donation, organ allocation, green corridors, and obtaining a donor card. He also provided practical guidance on becoming a donor, such as scanning a QR code on the MOHAN Foundation’s website or opting for organ donation while applying for a driver’s license.
The session, attended by approximately 160 students and teachers, included the distribution of informational materials on organ donation.
To reinforce his message, Mr. Pereira recommended the film Aye Zindagi, now streaming on Zee5. The film tells the true story of Vinay, a software engineer diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, and his emotional journey with grief counselor Revathy Rajan. It also highlights the decision by Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, the Country Director of the MOHAN Foundation, and her family to donate their son’s organs after his passing.
Mrs. Indira Phalgaonkar, the coordinating teacher, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of Headmaster Mr. Gurudas Palkar and the school management to Mr. Pereira and the MOHAN Foundation for their dedicated efforts in promoting organ donation.
