On December 8, 2022, MOHAN Foundation organized a meeting cum discussion on “Implementation of deceased organ donation programme in JNIMS”.
The session began with the felicitation of Prof. L. Deben Singh, Director, JNIMS & Prof. Kh. Lokeshwar Singh, Medical Superintendent, JNIMS by Ms. Pallavi. The attendees included staff from different departments like Administration, Urology, Nephrology, Anaesthesiology & Critical care, Nursing, Psychiatry, Forensic sciences, Surgery & Ethical team.
Ms. Pallavi started the discussion with a presentation that outlined the various factors that ensure the success of a deceased donation program in a hospital – such as collective ownership and inter departmental co-ordination, formation of a steering committee to lead and monitor the program, buy-in of top management, setting up of robust SOP’s (Standard Operating Protocols) at every step, early identification and certification of Brain death and conducting activities to promote organ donation within the hospital and in the community.
She also shared with the group the various training available with MOHAN Foundation and the online apps that have been created to assist in optimization, certification and maintenance of brain death. She also shared the SOP’s prepared by MOHAN Foundation that JNIMS could collectively discuss and modify for themselves.
The presentation was followed by a discussion where Ms. Pallavi reminded the need for JNIMS being registered with NOTTO and registering their patients on the waiting list registry of NOTTO. JNIMS. The absence of cross matching facilities was brought up by Prof. Dr. Rajesh Waikhom, Dept. of Nephrology, JNIMS. Deputy Director (Administration) laid out process of the SOTTO which is taken up after the approval Chief Minister of Manipur. Post the discussion, MOHAN Foundation team requested for awareness sessions in every department of JNIMS and putting up awareness posters in different departments of JNIMS. The same to be coordinated with medical superintendent of JNIMS.
At the end of the discussion, Prof. Deben expressed that the team will get together and discuss and set into motion all that is needed to make the deceased donation programme happened at the earliest.
