Indian Organ Donation Day celebrated at Sri Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai

  • The Community Medicine Department of Sri Balaji Medical College & Hospital, Chromepet Chennai organised a seminar on Organ Donation and Transplantation on 16 August 2024 in their premises.  MOHAN Foundation’s Dr Hemal Kanvinde and Mr Ganesh were the resource persons. Around 200 students from various departments attended the seminar.  All students were given an information brochure on Organ Donation.

    Dr Shanthi Edward, the Head of the Department delivered the welcome speech and introduced the topic. She said the students had carried out a rally in the community to increase the awareness on Organ Donation. This was done on the 13th August.

    Dr Hemal Kanvinde gave a talk on the concepts of organ donation, including law, statistics, what, when and how of donation. The concept of Brain death was explained and a movie about it was played.  She also spoke of the myths in the public, how to register as an organ donor.

    This was followed by an activity based learning on the 10 step protocol for a successful deceased organ donation. Students actively took up various roles and participated in the activity.  They learnt about the various stakeholders in a donation.

     The seminar ended with a video of the recipient testimony.   All 200 students picked a donor card.

    Discussion after the talk was on organ allocation, and tissue donation
