On 16th April 2019, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with Transplants – Help the Poor Foundation, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at I.G.G.M.C Nagpur. The facilitators were Dr. Jimmy Gupta and Mrs. Prarthana Dwivedi (Transplant Coordinator). The nurses, paramedic staff and the Resident doctors of the SICU Department participated in the workshop. About 15 persons attended the session.
Dr. Jimmy Gupta introduced MOHAN Foundation and Transplants - Help the Poor Foundation as not-for-profit charities working for the cause of organ donation. Various concepts such as circulatory death, brain death, organs & tissues that can be donated in either case of death, tissues that can be donated (cornea, skin, bones, etc.) were covered. She also touched upon newer medical advancements such as hand donation.
The emotional aspect of how many lives can be saved / healed through organ and tissue donation was covered through examples of successful transplant stories, articles and news about green corridor.
Mrs. Prarthana shared some of the myths surrounding deceased organ donation and explained the relevant facts. She described the importance of discussing organ donation with the family and carrying a Donor Card in the purse or wallet. We thank Dr Vaishali Shelgaokar (HOD Anaesthesia) and Dean Dr Ajay Keoliya for supporting the cause of organ donation.
