On 6th August, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation was organised for the employees of National Thermal Power Cooperation (NTPC), Noida at their office. NTPC Limited is the largest Indian state-owned electric utilities company based in New Delhi, India. The initiative to organise the session was taken by Mr. S P Singh, Assistant General Manager, Human Resources (HR), NTCP Ltd.
Ms. Pallavi Kumar, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi conducted the session. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Geetika Shiv, General Manager, HR, NTPL Ltd.
The session started with Ms. Pallavi Kumar introducing the Foundation and the array of activities it's been involved in, to provide the much needed information regarding organ donation to the general public and the medical fraternity. Further; she spoke about the concept of brain death; the demand for organs and the need for deceased organ donation; and the need for the Government to be proactive to support the cause.
The employees actively participated in the session. The following issues were discussed: the lack of a central registry for recipients, the small number of hospitals doing deceased organ donation, religious myths about organ donation, and about organ donation from unclaimed bodies.
The session was attended by 90 employees. A few of them signed the donor card immediately and a few others were willing to discuss it with their families and then sign the card. A total of 30 participants picked up the donor card.
