Awareness programme on organ donation conducted at School of Nursing, Saina Institute of Medical Sciences, Yaralpat, Manipur

  • On June 20, 2024, the MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness programme on organ donation for the nursing students at the School of Nursing, Saina Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Yaralpat, Manipur. The session was conducted by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, of the MOHAN Foundation.

     

    Ms. Sharmila Laishram, Lecturer, Department of Child Health Nursing, School of Nursing, SIMS, coordinated the session. Participants included Institute faculty and first-year nursing students.

     

    Ms. Monica started the session by evaluating the students' prior knowledge of organ donation and transplantation. Then, she started her presentation by introducing the MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its vision. Throughout the session, she maintained audience engagement by highlighting the challenges of deceased organ donation in the region.

     

    The following points were discussed with the help of a PowerPoint presentation:

    • Organ donation and its various types

    • The law governing transplantation

    • The distinction between circulatory death and brain death

    • The transplant programme operating in Manipur

    • Stories of deceased donors in Manipur

    • Common facts and myths about organ donation

    • Details about corneal transplants and eye banks

    • Family consent plays a crucial role in the organ donation process.

    • Professional courses provided by MF

     

    Later, the participants watched a video that showcased the entire process and coordination of deceased donations. Then, the MF team had a short interaction with the participants and discussed the frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to organ donation.

     

    Close to 40 participants attended the session.
