Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Tula’s Institute, Dehradun

  • On October 4, 2024, MOHAN Foundation conducted an organ donation awareness session at Tula’s Institute, Dehradun, in association with the Lions Club Rishikesh Devbhoomi. The invitation was extended by Mr. Sunil Jain, Managing Director of Tula’s Institute.

     

    Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader at MOHAN Foundation, stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh, served as the speaker for the session, which was attended by the staff and students of Tula’s Institute.

     

    The session commenced with Mr. Arora inviting participants to share their knowledge about organ donation. He then provided an in-depth overview of the current status of organ donation in India, covering the following topics:

    • What is organ donation, and why is it important?

    • Who can be an organ donor?

    • Explanation of live and deceased donors

    • Organ donation during life and after death

    • Brain death and the differences between coma and brain death

    • Eye and skin donation, including steps required to preserve corneas after death

    • The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Whole body donation

    • Living kidney transplantation facilities at AIIMS Rishikesh

    • Myths and facts about organ donation

    • How individuals can contribute to this noble cause

    • Goals and objectives of MOHAN Foundation and the Anudaan initiative

     

    Later, Mr. Arora emphasized the urgent need in this field, encouraging participants to consider organ donation after discussions with their family, friends, and colleagues.

     

    The session was highly interactive, with participants enthusiastically engaging in the discussion and posing numerous questions. Some of the queries raised included:

    • “Many teachers wear spectacles; can we still donate our corneas after death?”

    • “Is hand transplantation possible?”

    • “If a patient is on a ventilator, does the family have the right to request doctors to perform an apnoea test?”

    • “If a patient is far down the waiting list and in serious condition, are they given priority?”

     

    Mr. Ankit, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, commented that there is no greater gift than organ donation, and he encouraged everyone to pledge to donate blood during their lifetime and organs after passing away.

     

    At the conclusion of the session, the staff and students applauded the efforts of MOHAN Foundation and the Lions Club Rishikesh Devbhoomi. Many expressed their intention to discuss organ donation with their families and consider pledging. Close to 100 participants attended the session.
