On April 2, 2025, MOHAN Foundation (MF) conducted an awareness session on organ donation for traffic police officers at the Traffic Police Headquarters, Todapur, New Delhi. The session was led by Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MF NCR, with support from Ms. Sanya Santosh, Programme Officer, MF NCR.
Ms. Simran introduced MOHAN Foundation to the participants and assessed their existing knowledge of organ donation. She then provided an overview of organ donation in India, highlighting key aspects of the donation and transplantation process. To help explain the concept of brain death, a short, informative film was shown.
The session covered several important topics:
• Meaning and importance of organ donation
• Who can become an organ donor
• Differences between living and deceased donors
• Organs that can be donated during life and after death
• Brain death
• Eye donation and cornea preservation after death
• Key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994
• Role of MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation
• How individuals can support the cause
• Common myths and facts about organ donation
• Difference between coma and brain death
• Case studies
During the discussion, one of the participants shared an incident about a young boy in his neighbourhood who had committed suicide. The family wanted to honour his wish to donate organs, but since it was a case of circulatory death, only his corneas could be donated. He also mentioned that he previously believed corneal donation involved the removal of the entire eye but later learned that only the corneal tissue is retrieved.
Another participant noted that families often come forward to donate their loved one's corneas in Medico-Legal Cases (MLC).
The session also covered the role of NOTTO (National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation) in organ allocation and regulation, the legal age for live donation (18+), and the importance of consent.
The session was highly interactive, with participants asking insightful questions, including:
• Why can only close relatives donate organs as living donors?
• What is the process of body donation?
Approximately 25 participants attended the session.
