  • Under the aegis of AIIMS Rishikesh, the MOHAN Foundation conducted an organ donation awareness session at Community Radio Rishikesh on February 16, 2024.

This event was in continuation of an awareness programme on "Renal Transplantation and Organ Donation," which was held at AIIMS Rishikesh on February 9, 2024. In this programme, radio bites from kidney donors and recipients were captured by Mr. Ankit, Radio Jockey, and Radio Rishikesh to be used for the subject event. He coordinated with the MF team in AIIMS Rishikesh to organise a session for the staff of Community Radio Rishikesh.

Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader-MF posted at AIIMS Rishikesh, served as the speaker for the session, which was attended by the staff of Community Radio Rishikesh and Bhartiya Gramotthan Sanstha, Uttarakhand.

Mr. Sanchit Arora was felicitated by Ms. Gita Chandola, President, Radio Rishikesh, and Mr. Dinesh Goyal, Mentor, Bhartiya Grammottan Sanstha, Uttarakhand.

The session commenced with Mr. Sanchit Arora inviting participants to share their knowledge about organ donation. He then elaborated on the current status of organ donation in India, covering various topics in detail:

    • What is organ donation, and why is it important to donate organs?

    • Who can be an organ donor?

    • Explanation of live and deceased donors

    • Organ donation during life and after death

    • Brain death

    • Differences between coma and brain death

    • Eye donation and steps required to preserve corneas after death

    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Role of the MOHAN Foundation

    • What an individual can do to contribute to this noble cause

    • Myths and facts about organ donation

    Experience shared by participants

    • Bina Pundir shared how she successfully donated her mother’s cornea after her death and how she feels so divine after this act.

    • Mamta Negi shared that she desired to donate one of her kidneys to her sister, who was suffering from end-stage renal disease. However, her parents did not provide consent for the donation. They have now enlisted themselves on the waiting list for a kidney recipient at PGIMS Chandigarh.

Overall, the session was highly interactive, with participants enthusiastically contributing to the discussion and posing numerous queries. Some of the questions raised during the session included:

    • Can a person who has cataract donate his/her eyes?

    • Is there a specific time period allocated for the retrieval of tissues?

    • If a family refuses organ donation, are organs retrieved against their will?

    • How can someone pledge for organ donation?

    • Is a donor card considered a legal document?

At the end of the session, Ms. Gita Chandola concluded with a motivating slogan in the local language.

    • Marta hai shareer, Amar hai Atma, and Angdaan se milta hai swayam Par-matma.

The above slogan indicates that “the body may perish, but the soul is immortal; through organ donation, one meets the divine.”.

The session provided an opportunity for around 40 participants to get a detailed insight into organ donation, and they felt motivated to make a mark towards the noble cause of organ donation.
