On May 1, 2024, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation for students pursuing Bachelors in Management at NorthCap University (NCU), Gurugram. This session was organized by Connecting Young Indians (CYi) in collaboration with MF. Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director of MOHAN Foundation NCR, served as the resource person, accompanied by Ms. Simran Anand and Ms. Sanya Santosh, Program Officers from MOHAN Foundation. Mr. Anuj Nagpal, CII Chapter Lead, Gurugram, Mr. Akshay Maheshwari, Chapter Chair of CYi, Gurugram, and Mr. Ashu Diwan, Yuva Chair of CYi, Gurugram, organized and presented at the program. Ms. Sona Vikas, a Professor at NCU, coordinated the session.
MF has previously participated in CYi's organ donation awareness campaigns as an NGO partner. The focus of CYi's campaign for 2024 is "Building Bharat," aiming to fortify India's future by empowering the next generation of changemakers. This multifaceted concept encompasses various aspects of India's development, including healthcare, education, technology, economy, and social reforms, emphasizing teamwork, innovation, and entrepreneurship for a stronger and more prosperous India. As part of this theme, CYi is conducting organ donation awareness programs in several locations.
Mr. Akshay facilitated the introduction, and Ms. Pallavi led the session on organ donation. She began by assessing the participants' understanding, dispelling misconceptions, and then delving into the fundamentals through a PowerPoint presentation and a short film on brain death.
The session covered the following topics in detail:
• The significance of organ donation in society
• Processes and timing of organ donation
• Organs eligible for donation during life and after death
• Transplant waiting list scenario in India
• Distinction between brain death and coma
• MOHAN Foundation's role
• Common myths and realities about organ donation
• Eye donation
• Importance of family consent
Participants actively shared their perspectives on the cause, with many recounting their family's experiences with organ donation and transplantation. One student shared about his uncle's struggle with kidney failure and dialysis, awaiting a kidney transplant.
The session was highly interactive, with participants enthusiastically contributing to discussions and posing various queries, including:
• Clarification on the vegetative state in a coma
• Explanation of opt-out and opt-in system
At the conclusion of the session, Mr. Anuj and the faculty expressed their appreciation to Ms. Pallavi for the insightful session. Close to 50 students participated in the session.
