Imphal, June 26 2022: Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has created history in the held of kidney transplant by becoming the first government run health facility in the state and the second in the northeast to conduct kidney transplant successfully.

Nagpur division has registered a good survival rate of around 90% in liver and kidney transplants done on the basis of organs received from brain-dead donors. The rate is higher than the national average. The one year success rate of kidney transplant is 88.13% while five years rate is 74.57%. In case of liver transplant, the division registered one year survival rate of 88-90% while 85% people survived for three years.
In the wake of the kidney transplant malpractice case involving Pune’s Ruby Hall Clinic, doctors from the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT) and other professional associations have clarified that organ transplant professionals are neither required to certify the relationship between donors and recipients nor competent to detect illegal financial deals.
Surgeons at KLE Society’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) have performed a heart transplant. This is the third such procedure conducted successfully in the last five years in the medical college. A team led by cardiac surgeon Richard Saldanha transplanted the heart of a brain-dead donor and saved the life of a 25-year-old man from Goa.

The ‘Jeevan Amrut’ awareness program encourages people to pledge to donate their organs to save others’ lives. Compared to countries like Spain, Portugal, the United States and several others, India has a very low organ donation rate.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will hold an online rangoli competition in association with MOHAN Foundation, an NGO that promotes organ donation and transplantation, to raise awareness on the importance of organ donation. The will also acknowledge those who have donated organs and celebrate the lives of those who have received a new lease of life.
Rotary Club Kohima hosted Rtn. Bhal Sekhar Chilana along with his wife Namita from Rotary Club Navi Mumbai Sunrise, Dist-3142 at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on February 18. Media Cell, Kohima Rotary Club in a press release said that the couple is travelling for 131 days to visit 131 cities of 28 states and 8 UTs covering 22500Kms with a mission to reach masses for organ donation awareness campaign across India.
Little did the parents of 26-year-old Chaitra K.R. in Kodicheruvu at Srinivasapura taluk in Kolar district expect the tragic turn of events on her wedding reception day. She collapsed on the stage during the reception on February 6 and was taken to NIMHANS the following day.
