On the occasion of the UN World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Traffic Police Jaipur, Muskaan Foundation for Road Safety, Mohan Foundation and Jaipur Citizen Forum and Neuro Trauma Society Rajasthan along with bereaved family members paid a floral tribute to those who had succumbed to road accidents.
This Friday, on October 9, the Karamveer episode of KBC will see Dr. Sunil Shroff, Founder & Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation along with actor Riteish Deshmukh on the Hot Seat championing the cause of Organ Donation. Started in 1997, MOHAN (Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network) Foundation is a pioneering NGO in the area of deceased organ donation and has been a torch bearer of this program.
As September rolled in, Mr Kamlesh Gadage visited the hospital for the 10th time in eight months. The 36-year-old vegetable seller from Pune suffers from liver cirrhosis, and had registered for a liver transplant in December. “I am fifth on the waiting list, but due to Covid, my wait is extending forever. I have a lot of pain and visit the hospital every 15 to 20 days,” Mr Gadage said.
Sixty eight-year-old Arumugam* joined the transplant waitlist for a liver in March this year. Six months down the line, with the pandemic having rewritten the norms of organ donation and transplant, he is still waiting. His daughter says that they have been lucky to have not had any need for emergency care, making the wait relatively easier.
The organ donation rate in India has increased from 0.08 to almost 0.8 per million population in a span of nine years. But the entire process - from creating awareness about organ donation to identifying donors and motivating families to donate, fulfilling legal formalities and making sure the harvested organ reaches the right people at the right time - has numerous challenges that stakeholders have been facing over the years.

The post graduate institute of medical sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak is all set to start organ harvesting and transplant services in Haryana to reduce the gap between huge demand and supply, said an official on Wednesday. According to an official data, 10,000 people need organ transplants every year, for which only 500 donors are available.
For the first time, the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday declared a patient brain dead and harvested his organs. The donor patient, a 35-year-old man from Kattabettu in the Nilgiris, had fallen from the top of his under-construction house.
