  • Successful heart transplantation in Belagavi

    Surgeons at KLE Society’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) have performed a heart transplant. This is the third such procedure conducted successfully in the last five years in the medical college. A team led by cardiac surgeon Richard Saldanha transplanted the heart of a brain-dead donor and saved the life of a 25-year-old man from Goa.

                • Swap transplants get a lease of life

                  Kerala High Court recently ruled in Moideenkutty v. District Level Authorisation Committee for Transplantation of Human Organs case that "swap transplants" would be permissible even if donor and recipient are not near-relatives, provided the organ donor has a special reason. Swap transplant is an exchange of organs between two families, who cannot donate the organ to their own family member because of blood group mismatch.
