200th Liver Transplant Surgery on Pakistani Patient Performed at Delhi Hospital

A New Delhi hospital can now boast of a major achievement in its contribution to India-Pakistan relations after performing the 200th liver transplant surgery for patients from across the border.

Indraprastha Apollo Hospital conducted the surgery on 12-year old Syed Sheharyar Ali from Karachi. Pakistan has no liver transplant surgery hospital and scores of patients travel across the border to take advantage of the booming medical tourism sector in the country.

Sheharyar’s mother, Zainab Shujaat said that her son suffered from chronic liver disease for the last three years was brought to India in critical condition on October 2, a feat that was possible only after Indian doctors urged a quick approval of visa.

“Suffering from chronic liver disease for the past three years, my son's condition deteriorated. But at the behest of the Indian doctors, our visa came through within two days. They have given him a new lease of life for which we shall always be grateful to them and the country. People here are so loving that I have decided to visit India again after six months”, she said.
