World’s First Womb Transplant Will See Mom Donate Uterus to Daughter

June 15, 2011

A 56-year old British woman is willing to participate in the world’s first womb transplant surgery which could see her uterus donated to her daughter who was born without reproductive organs.

Eva Ottosson said that she hoped the transplant will be successful one and allow her 25-year old daughter, Sara, to become pregnant. Sara suffers from a condition known as Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser (MRKH) syndrome which means that she was born without any reproductive organs.

This will be the second time that such a transplant has been tried. The first attempt at a womb transplant was tried in 2000 in Saudi Arabia when a 26-year old woman received a uterus from a 46-year old. However doctors were forced to remove it 99 days later as the recipient developed some problems.

The surgery will be conducted by a Swedish team led by Dr Mats Brannstrom who said that this will be the most difficult transplant surgery to conduct.
