In a landmark achievement, the Government General Hospital's Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Chennai has carried out two heart transplants.

These surgeries were carried out in the last three weeks, authorities said. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam praised the efforts of doctors and called on other departments to emulate the same. The operations were undertaken on July 16 and July 19.

The minister also said that such efforts would help the poor seek treatment at government venues rather than private care. “Post operative care is crucial for poor patients and government hospitals are focussing more on it. Permission has been granted to procure medicines locally to tackle problems of short supply of medicines,” said Mr. Panneerselvam.

The surgeries were carried out on a 46-year-old male and 61-year-old male, who belonged to the poorer sections of the society and needed heart transplants as they had dilated cardiomyopathy.
