The health department in The Philippines is set to formulate rules on organ donations to foreigners. This was disclosed by Jade del Mundo, the Health Undersecretary.

Mr.Mundo emphasized on the need for such guidelines as in the absence of such rules, organ trade has been flourishing in the country especially among the poorer sections of the society.

According to Mr. Mundo, the need to set forth a list of guidelines has become necessary in the wake of promoting medical tourism in the country. If this is taken care of, Philippines could witness a stream of foreign patients especially from Japan. Currently government is busy carrying out a number of parleys between experts in this field and health officials to arrive at ways to regulate organ donations.

As per the survey conducted by the University of the Philippines, slum dwellers were selling their kidneys for $1,440 to $2,469.
