USC Transplanted Kidney in a Wrong Patient

February 18, 2011

A kidney was accidentally transplanted in a wrong patient at USC University Hospital, following which the hospital has shut down its kidney transplant program last month, prior to which the hospital would perform about two transplants per week. The hospital authorities expect transplants to begin from Friday.

It was a deadly error but fortunately the patient who was given the wrong kidney did not have any complications as the kidney was a compatible match. The original intended recipient of this misplaced kidney received another one after few days.

Apparently the mix-up happened because two kidneys from separate donors came to the transplant center around the same time.

According to the chief executive of transplant donor network agency OneLegacy, Mr. Thomas Mone, the packaging and documentation was accurate and presumably it might have been a human error at the hospital.  The State Department of Public Health and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which regulates the transplant programs for the US government is investigating this case.
