Survey Says Over 3 Million Brits Willing to Donate Kidney to Strangers

A poll conducted by a kidney donation charity organization in Britain has found that more than three million Britons would be willing to donating their kidney to a stranger.

The charity, known as Give A Kidney - One's Enough, was started by a 72-year old consultant Dr Chris Burns-Cox of Gloucestershire. The organization commissioned a survey which was conducted by YouGov and it has shown some surprising results.

More than 33 percent of Britons said that they had no idea it was legal to donate their kidneys to strangers while nearly 25 percent believed that they could only donate kidneys to someone they were related to or someone they knew.

Dr Burns-Cox, who himself had donated one of his kidneys to a stranger, said that there was a distinct lack of awareness regarding NHS schemes in kidney donation. “Not enough people know about the NHS scheme, which is a tragedy. More than 300 people a year die on the waiting list for a kidney transplant and we think those deaths could be prevented if more people knew they could give”, he said.
