Religious leaders joined hands in India to dismiss the myth that people will be born blind in their next birth if they donate their eyes when they die.

With the country facing a huge shortage of eyes for transplantations, the myth that people will be reborn blind if they donate their eyes is gathering popularity especially among villagers. However speaking at a press conference at Narayana Nethralaya, as part of National Eye Donation Fortnight, leaders of the three major religions in the country spoke out against the superstition.

Sri Sri Sri Balagangadhara Swamiji of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Sikh leader Baldev Singh and Sheikh Maulana Khallelur Rehman were present at the press conference with the later stating that people should not hesitate to donate their eyes.

“The Muslim community has come up with a fatwa in Saudi Arabia stating that organ donation is a noble deed of humanity and people should not hesitate in donating organs thinking of rebirth”, he added.
