People Should Have a Choice About Organ Donation

March 19, 2010

The Commons has heard that people should be forced to declare if they want to donate their organs after death. Labour MP David Borrow (South Ribble) said that such a system would help overcome at least 1,000 avoidable deaths in patients who wait endlessly for transplants.

"Reforming the current opt-in to a mandated choice system will increase the number of people registered as organ donors. By choosing to be an organ donor we offer patients a second chance at life. I want to see a system which reduces the number of avoidable deaths to an absolute minimum," Mr Borrow said.

He has introduced a Organ And Tissue Donation (Mandated Choice) Bill that would ask UK citizens to mandate their wishes about donation.

The Bill received an unopposed first reading, but other fear such a law would put moral pressure on people.
