Number of Organ Donors in Britain Crosses 18 Million Mark

The NHS in Britain has revealed that the number of organ donors in the country has passed the 18 million mark but said that more people will have to sign up in order, especially among blacks and Asians in order to reduce the waiting time for patients from those communities.

According to the stats, Scots lead the race when signing up in the Organ Donor Register with an estimated 37 percent, or 1.8 million, currently agreeing to donate their organs compared to the national average of 30 percent.

The director of organ donation and transplantation, Sally Johnson said that while the huge number of donors is a good news, more people from the black and Asian communities need to sign up since patients from those communities have to wait three times longer due to lack of donors.

“Getting people to sign up to the register is only half the battle. In order to see that their wishes are carried out in the event of their deaths, it is essential that those who want to become donors discuss donation with family and friends”, Johnson added.
