Mexican Medics Drop Heart Minutes Before Transplant

January 13, 2012

Medical staff in Mexico are being ridiculed after being caught on camera for having dropped a human heart being rushed to a transplant patient by private jet and police helicopter.

Great efforts were made to get the organ to its destination in time for a life-saving operation and in their haste to leave the helicopter, one of the medics tripped, dropping the cooler containing the heart, which rolled out on to the concrete, along with ice and a bag of saline. The medics quickly picked up the bag containing the heart, replaced it in the cooler and rushed onwards to the La Raza hospital.

A spokesman from Mexico's health secretariat said, "Fortunately, the heart was protected and not damaged. The heart was protected in a waterproof steel container, which meant it was never exposed to the outside environment."

The transplant operation was a success. The patient is responding well to her new heart.
