Meet Mason Lewis, a four-year-old boy and the youngest person in The United Kingdom to undergo a successful lung transplant.

Mason, who was a victim of pulmonary hypertension from his birth, was operated at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London and is now enjoying a new lease of life.

The eight hour transplant operation was performed by Professor Martin Elliott and the lungs transplanted were just 4.3ins (11cm) tall and each weighed 4.9oz (140g). "The operation is the same as for larger people, but obviously one needs greater precision and delicacy," Prof Martin said.

Dr Spencer, consultant in transplant respiratory medicine, said: "This is the first time in the UK we have seen a child this small successfully transplanted with lungs this small. It is a good advance in transplantation, and something which previously had only been carried out in a small number of centres in the United States."
