Kidney Donations Possible from Cardiac Death Donors

August 21, 2010

A new study from Cambridge University has shown that kidneys from donors who died from heart-related ailments are suitable for donation.

The study of over 9,000 patients revealed that cardiac-death donor kidneys work in a manner similar to brain-dead donor kidneys and also last as long as the latter.

“Cardiac-death donors are an extremely important and overlooked source of high-quality donor kidneys,” said co-author of the study Dr Dominic Summers, who is a UK-based transplant surgeon. “The widespread use of this technique will increase donation rates and save lives”.

The study details are published in the UK medical journal the Lancet.
