A 3-year old girl who underwent a liver transplant surgery when nine months old thanks to a 37-year old donor has fully recovered from the operation.

Ellie-Mae Wolfenden, from Cheshire, was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer in 2009. She underwent chemotherapy while waiting for a matching donor.

Two months after being put on the waiting list, she underwent the transplant surgery at St James’ Hospital in Leeds after being given half of a 37-year old man’s liver.

Ellie-Mae’s mother, Karen said that she asked the hospital authorities who the donor was and was surprised when told that it was a 37-year old man. ““I asked where the liver had come from because I didn’t like to think of another child dying to help Ellie-Mae and was astonished to be told it was half of that of a 37-year-old man and the other half had saved another life”, she said.
