16-Year-Old Becomes Youngest Person to Receive Heart Transplant in Karnataka

July 11, 2011

Sixteen year old MS Sandeep became the youngest person to undergo a heart transplant in Karnataka after doctors were able to use the heart from a 25-year old man who was brain dead following an accident back in May.

Sandeep was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy 18 months ago and doctors gave him a maximum of three or four months to live.

Sandeep’s father, police constable B Shivarudraya said that seven years ago he had lost a daughter for the exact cause and was hoping that he would not lose his son as well.

Senior consultant cardiac surgeon Dr Praveen Kumar said that Sandeep was very lucky that he received the heart just in time and expressed the need for more people to donate their hearts. “It all depended on the availability of a heart. That's why we need many more donors. In Sandeep's case, he was very lucky as we got the heart of the 25-year-old man who became brain dead after a traffic accident”, he said.
