Wednesday, May 26, 2010
23 years old Balachander, who hails from Tiruchinapally, Tamilnadu, was working as a Safety Officer with L&T Limited at Kadapa. He was going by Tata Sumo for routine office related purchases on 16th May when he met with an accident. He was immediately rushed to Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad.
Although the intensivists did everything to save his life, he did not survive. He was declared brain dead on the afternoon of 24th May. Then, the Medical Superintendent of Apollo Hospital called Mr. Raghuram, Convenor of MOHAN Foundation, AP, to counsel the family for organ donation. As the family members could speak only Tamil, Mr. Raghuram spoke to them in Tamil and motivated them to donate Balachander's organs. They consented to donate all organs, after which arrangements were made to take care of postmortem formalities at the time of organ retrieval. Balachander's kidneys, liver, heart valves and eyes were retrieved at 10 pm., and transplanted on needy patients on the waiting list. Then, the body has been embalmed as the family wanted to take the body to Tiruchirapally.
Thanks to the cooperation rendered by family members, hospital management, police and forensic authorities, seven people will get a new lease of life.
