Chennai, 3rd December 2017: Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant in the world that was performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard on 3rd December, 1967 in South Africa, is MOHAN Foundation, an NGO that has been working in the field of deceased organ donation for the past two decades. Metro Retro - A Celebration of Life marks the milestone of heart transplants coming of age in India, and Chennai in particular. It also celebrates the 20th anniversary of MOHAN Foundation. In a first-ever event in a Metro Rail Station renowned Carnatic music vocalists Ranjani & Gayatri will be performing at 6 pm on Sunday 3rd December 2017 at Vadapalani Metro Station.

Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation said, “Dr. K. M. Cherian, Frontier Life Line Hospital put Tamil Nadu on the map of heart transplants when he performed the first heart transplant in Chennai on 23rd September 1995. It was an inspiring example of religious integration - the donor was a Hindu, the recipient was a Muslim and the doctors were Christians! Dr. K. R. Balakrishnan of Fortis Malar has performed 113 heart transplants in close to two years. Heart transplants are also being successfully performed in the government sector. And now there are many more heart transplant centres that have come up in the state.”

Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, MOHAN Foundation whose brainchild it was to hold this landmark event in the Chennai Metro Rail Station said the idea came to her during her journey to work every day on the Metro. She added, “The Metro Rail project has been successfully launched and is operational in the face of numerous challenges, much like what MOHAN Foundation has faced and achieved in its 20-year journey. MOHAN Foundation's vision for 2020 is to double deceased organ donations to 1600 per year and save many more precious lives.”
