Organ Donation Awareness Session at Traffic Police Headquarters, Todapur, New Delhi

On March 8, 2024, MOHAN Foundation (MF) conducted a session on organ donation for the traffic police inspectors at the Traffic Police Headquarters (TPH) in Todapur, New Delhi.

 

Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MF, had a meeting with Mr. Umesh Malik, Traffic Inspector, to discuss the possibility of conducting an awareness session for the police personnel. He readily agreed to add organ donation awareness sessions to their session roster. She also introduced the Foundation and its objectives and mission.

 

Ms. Anand was the resource person, and she was accompanied by Ms. Sanya Santosh, Programme Officer, MF, Delhi, NCR.

 

Ms. Anand began the session by introducing MF to the participants and asking them about their understanding of organ donation. The following topics were explained in detail:

 

• What is organ donation, and what's its need in society?

• Who can be an organ donor?

• Explanation of live and deceased donors

• Organs that can be donated during life and after death

• Brain death

• Eye donation and steps required to preserve the cornea after death.

• Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

• Role of MOHAN Foundation

• What an individual can do to contribute to this noble cause

• Myths and facts about organ donation

• Differences between coma and brain death

 

A short informative film on brain death was shown, and the importance of family consent in the process of organ donation was also explained in detail.

 

Participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked a few questions, including:

• How are tissues retrieved and stored?

• How do I pledge for organ and tissue donation?

 

Close to 70 participants attended the session.
