On April 29, 2023, MOHAN Foundation (MF) conducted an awareness session on organ donation at College of Nursing- Medical Directorate, Manipur for the nursing students. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation was the key speaker and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Co-ordinator accompanied her.

 

Earlier, MF representatives had written to Mrs. Ningthoujam Surbala Devi, Principal, College of Nursing, Medical Directorate, Lamphelpat, Imphal, requesting her to grant permission for conducting sensitization sessions for the nursing students of the college. She accepted the request, and the sessions on April 29, 2023, were the start of this drive.

 

Two sessions for the third and fourth-year students pursuing B.Sc. Nursing were conducted one after the other in two batches.

 

The students warmly welcomed the MOHAN Foundation team. Ms. Monica began the session by overviewing the perceptions of organ donation and transplantation among the participants. The presentation began by explaining the MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its vision. She continued with a brief overview of living donor renal transplantation happening in the state of Manipur. Then, various topics were addressed.

 

Such as:

• Law enacted for transplantation
• Types of donors
• Organ donation rate of India in per million population (ppm)
• Brain dead vs. circulatory dead
• Facts and myths about organ donation
• Stories of patients waiting for deceased donors
• Importance of the donor card
• The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation
• Courses offered by the MOHAN Foundation

 

Thereafter, a short interaction was held, where participants were briefed about their perceptions of organ donation. Later, FAQs on organ donation were distributed to the participants for better understanding of the topic.

 

Close to 80 participants attended both the sessions. And 17 participants pledged for organ donation.
