Awareness session on Organ Donation conducted at ICICI Foundation Academy For Skills, Karol Bagh, New Delhi |
On April 28, 2023, the MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation for the students pursuing livelihood training at the ICICI Academy for Skills, Karol Bagh, New Delhi. Ms. Isha Bajaj Sharma, Faculty and Centre In-Charge, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, New Delhi, approached Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation NCR, via phone call to organise the OD session for the new ongoing morning and evening batches of the academy. The MF NCR office has already conducted the OD sessions for the previously ongoing batches in the months of November and February 2023. Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi, Programme Manager, MOHAN Foundation NCR, and Ms. Simran were the resource persons. The sessions were held for two groups of 40 and 45 female students between the ages of 18 and 30.
Academy teachers welcomed the MF faculty and introduced them to the students and the purpose of the talk. Dr. Muneet took a short introductory round with the students and formed a rapport with them. Ms. Simran began the session by asking participants about their understanding of organ donation. Participants from both groups engaged in a highly interactive discussion about the topic.
The following topics were explained with the help of a PowerPoint presentation by MF faculty. • Organ donation and its needs in society • When and how does organ donation take place? • Organs that can be donated during life and after death • Transplant waiting list in India • Brain death • difference between brain death and coma • Role of the MOHAN Foundation • Myths and facts about organ donation • Eye donation
Participants of both batches shared their views on every topic discussed in the session, and many of them shared their families' experiences with organ donation. Many of them shared their willingness to donate their organs.
Participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many questions. To name a few: • What is the difference between coma and brain death? • Brain death versus circulatory death: what is the difference? • Can brain also be donated? • Is it mandatory to carry a donor card for organ donation?
Feedback from the participants: • I got an understanding of the difference between coma and brain death. • A great presentation about the organ donation process in brain death and circulatory death • I received information about whole body donation. • I want to receive more details about the courses offered by MF.
Close to 85 students participated in the session.
