On February 3, 2023, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness programme on organ donation for the nursing students at the School of Nursing, Saina Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Chinikon, Kangpokpi District, Manipur.Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Program Officer, MOHAN Foundation, was the speaker, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, accompanied her.
The session was coordinated by Ms. Sharmila Laishram, tutor, Dept. of Child Health Nursing, School of Nursing, SIMS. Participants included institute faculty and three batches of nursing students.
Ms. Monica started the session by evaluating the students' prior knowledge of organ donation and transplantation. Then, she started her presentation by introducing the MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its vision. Throughout the session, she kept the audience engaged by explaining the reality of poor deceased organ donation in the region.
The following points were discussed with the help of a power point presentation: • Types of organ donation • Laws enacted for transplantation • Coma vs. brain death • Organ Donation Facts and Myths • Eye donation • The importance of the donor card • How to pledge or sign up for organ donation on the MOHAN Foundation's website • The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation
Later, the students were informed about the development of the kidney transplant programme at the government-run hospital, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, which made them aware of the fact that things are looking up in the state of Manipur. They were also sensitised to the ever-growing need for organ transplants due to the rise of end-stage organ diseases.
After that, Ms. Udayini gave each participant a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about organ donation to help them understand what it means.
At the end of the session, the MOHAN Foundation team extended their gratitude to the teachers and students for providing the opportunity. The participants showed their keen interest in discussing the cause of organ donation with their families and friends before taking the decision to sign up for organ donation.
