On Dec 28, 2022, Dr Raja Kandaswamy, Director Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program and Medical Director, Solid Organ Transplant Services, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA visited MOHAN Foundation Chennai office. MOHAN Foundation in association with Network and Alliance of Transplant Coordinators (NATCO) and TRIOMPH (Transplant Recipients of India and Organ failure patients - a Movement to Provide Hope) organized two talks (online) keeping in mind his specialization.
- Eplet matching in Living Kidney Transplantation - 14 doctors joined this talk. He spoke of the new form of matching and better outcomes due to this new testing. Giving an example of an unrelated living donation of a nurse and a small child in the USA he highlighted the validity and use of the new type of matching.
- Pancreas transplantation - Current Status and Outcomes — 32 doctors and Transplant coordinators joined this talk. Prof. Syed Jamal Rizvi, Head of Urology Unit-1 at IKDRC Ahmedabad chaired the session and introduced the speaker. Dr Kandaswamy gave a comprehensive lecture on Pancreas transplant - its origin, diabetes and need for the transplant, recipient listing process, allocation policy, post transplant care and outcomes. He described salient points in a pancreas transplant surgery. It was a new topic for Transplant Coordinators. There was a good discussion after his talk - Age criteria for recipients, post transplant medications and simultaneous kidney pancreas transplant. Dr Jamal Rizwi thanked the speaker and concluded the talk.
