Gift of Life for Seven - First time from Maheswari Community |
Sri Purushottam Malani, a 52 years old wholesale businessman in Maharajgunj area was going to work on 2nd February, on his two wheeler, when a wheel from an auto rickshaw got unwound and stumbled up on his scooter. Immediately, he fell down receiving severe head injury. He was rushed to Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences where we he was put on life support system. Early morning of 4th, he was declared “brain dead”. Hearing this news, the entire family and friends thronged to KIMS. Sri. Malani was a very strong advocate of eye donation and counseled several families to donate eyes in the event of death. His friends from Lions Club of Hyderabad (East) swung into action immediately and informed Mr. and Mrs. Raghuram of MOHAN Foundation. Incidentally, Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram is the member of Lions Club of Hyderabad (East), where Sri. Malani was very active. In fact, he has participated in their awareness programs and carries an “Organ Donor Card”. The transplant coordinator at KIMS and the Raghuram couple motivated the family members to donate Sri. Malani’s organs. Lion Pushpa Boob, Lion Bhagwandas Boob and Lion Suresh Loya coordinated with the large extended family of about 80 members and convinced them to be part of the wonderful cause of organ donation.
Smt. Santosh Malani (wife of Sri Purushottam Malani) consented to organ donation, after which his kidneys, liver, heart valves and eyes were donated. Smt. Malani said, “my husband was a very cheerful person and very helpful by nature. I am glad he is going to continue to live on in 7 people. This is perhaps the first donation from marwadi community”.
MOHAN Foundation has made at least 120 presentations to members of Lions Club on eye and organ donation. These public education programs have gradually started yielding results. |
